Christmas time is my favorite time to DIY. There are so many fun and creative ways to decorate your home for the holidays. Since my husband and I have been together we have had a few ornament traditions we do each year. He collects a nutcracker and we have a picture ornament from that year. It is so much fun each year getting our ornaments out and reviewing the previous years.
Our Children are just not starting to understand our traditions, so it is time to start a new one with them. I wanted them to make an ornament each year that we can add to the tree. With so many great ideas swirling around in my head, it was hard to narrow it down to one. Eventually I came across these plastic bulbs at Michael’s for a great deal and couldn’t pass them up.
The kids have made plenty of hand and footprint crafts through the years, so that adorable snowman hand idea was marked off the list. Then I saw how other crafters were dumping various items in these bulbs and getting amazing results. The only item I had on hand was acrylic paint so I just went with that. The kids each picked out the colors they wanted and I poured the paint in.
Then came the fun part for the children. After placing the lid back on, I showed them how to hold their finger on the lid so it wouldn’t come off and I let them go to town. We sang Christmas songs as they jumped around shaking their bulb. When they were tired of shaking, I finished it by making sure all the clear parts were painted.
To complete the look and the tradition, I wrote their name and year on it and then sat it to the side to dry. When It was time to decorate the tree, both of my children were so proud of what they had made and I must say that I was proud of them too. It may not be a crazy DIY ornament but come on folks, they are 3 and 4 years old!
What Christmas ornament traditions do you have? Is your tree the same every year? Do you theme your tree? How often do you buy or make new ornaments? I want to know! Leave me a comment below.
