I had recently purchased some wooden spoons from Walmart to make three little pigs and a big bad wolf puppet. Then it dawned on me that I could make planter stakes for the holidays. Excited, I shared my idea with the kids. My son wanted me to make a monster and who is the most well known monster? Frankenstein of course! My daughter wanted me to paint a pumpkin because “pumpkins are so cute.”
This project is so adorable and depending on the age of your child, can be a fun family craft project. I painted ours when my kids were napping, painting is very soothing to me and my kids are still too little to paint, so win win for me!
As I said, I purchased my wooden spoons at Walmart. I picked out rounded and flat ones to add a different look to some. I already had the paints and brushes that I purchased before, I also had got them from Walmart. This is such an inexpensive craft and a fun one that you get to use your imagination with.
First paint the spoon area your base color, I chose to not paint the stick but you may want too. I noticed that I needed 2-3 coats of my base color to have no wood showing through. After your base color is dry, you should start your face details. Stencils are an option and they have plenty to choose from online but I like to free hand so that’s what I did.
Remember, the little details are what make the project, so use your imagination. For Halloween, anything goes! Make sure your paint is dry and then seal with a glossy or matte top coat. I used 2 coats of this since these will be outside.
Now the fun part, find a plant to stick them in and give your yard some fall bling! We decided to get some small plants and stick one of our Halloween spoons in as a gift for our neighbors and family members. This is a fun gift and something that you as well as everyone else will love to use for a long time to come.
