We have all been to plenty of holiday parties in our time and some were glorious nights that we talked about for months and others we found any excuse to leave. If you are thinking about having a holiday party this year, make it a good one with some of these great and unique ideas.
Have you ever heard of the cookie exchange parties, everyone makes their favorite holiday cookie and brings the recipe along for others to copy down if they like the way they taste. Then they get to take home a cute little photo album with all their new recipes in it! I personally have had a couple of these and although they were fun, they kinda lacked my up beat personality. So what if we use the same idea but with alcohol.
Guest should bring:
- Items required to make their favorite drink
- Recipe for drink written down
Hostess should supply:
- Festive party cups
- 3×5 cards
- Finger foods and Snacks
- Mini 4×6 photo album for each guest
I found all of these items for amazingly cheap prices at Walmart, and your house will already be adorned for Christmas, so this will be a thrifty but wonderful party that others will be copying for years to come.
Make sure everyone that is drinking alcohol drops their keys in a bucket for safe keeping and have a taxi service on speed dial for when they are ready to make their way back home. Or you could just have a huge adult sleep over!
Another awesome idea is the secret Santa parties. I also have had a few of these and attended quiet a few. I love these parties, I mean who doesn’t love opening gifts and going home with a gift you never would have thought to buy for yourself but you don’t always leave happy.
You pull names for your secret Santa party, you spend hours roaming the mall trying to find the perfect gift for your secret Santa. Once you find it, you wrap it up in the most beautiful paper and tie the most elaborate bow on it. You are so proud of your gift and all the effort you put into it. Secret Santa party day comes and you attend with a smile from ear to ear and your heart filled with joy and excitement. You keep a close eye on your secret Santa to see their reaction to the most perfect gift anyone has ever given them.
When it’s your turn to open your gift from your secret Santa and you know its going to be so spectacular. All the happiness leaves your heart when you see your gift is bagged in a brown bag and stapled shut. Inside is a fake piece of dog poop and a box of tissues. You smile through the laughs of your gag gift but inside you want to hunt down whoever gifted you this insanely stupid gift and ask them why they obviously don’t care about you or your feelings. Even though your thrilled that your secret Santa is going home over the moon, you cant help but fill disappointment for yourself.
This is not so easily fixed because if were real, we know there is always going to be that one asshole but to level the playing field it might be fun to theme the secret Santa exchanges. Depending on the group you are including, family, co workers, friends, children, you will want to pick a theme and price range that is best suited. I have compiled a list of ideas below.
- Board Games
- Coffee Cups/Tumblers
- Gift Cards
- Funny Socks
- Picture Frame
Ugly Sweater Party
Another holiday tradition is the ugly sweater party. I think it would be just as fun to wear an outfit that depicts your favorite Christmas character. Who wouldn’t want to put on all white, wear a fancy top hat and scarf, or have a bright shiny nose and antlers. I personally don’t own an ugly sweater nor will I buy one but I would be more inclined to buy a green shirt and yellow sunglasses. Most Characters would be easy to mimic and it could be fun to guess who everyone is dressed as. If you are not one to DIY your outfit, Amazon has wonderful choices and are fairly affordable. Here is a list of the top Christmas characters to dress as.
- Frosty the Snowman
- The Grinch
- Christmas Tree
- Gingerbread Man
- Polar Bear
Girl’s Craft Night
I can’t really express to you in words how much I love getting to make crafts. Add all my girlfriends, some wine and I’m set! The only thing that I can say about a girl’s craft night is, have one. Even if you are not a crafty person, its amazing how much fun you can have with a group of girls and a glue gun. Pinterest has easy DIY projects for the holidays that you can scan through or if your crafty yourself, come up with a unique one that everyone would enjoy.
The holidays are all about being around the ones you love and maybe some you don’t. Either way, make them fun, make them exciting and make them memorable.
Have an idea of your own? Please share, we would all love to hear how you celebrate the holidays.
